BES Technology Opportunity Statement

The ultimate goal of producing the highest possible student success rates at BES will happen in part through providing purposeful technology integrated instruction. The highest level of student achievement takes place when Technology is used as a transformative tool, rather then just an enhancement tool.

Our Digital Conversion Page is designed to help facilitate blended learning and the SAMR model to help successfully integrate technology into the classroom to improve students higher order thinking and technology skills.

BES App Vetting and Request Model

BES uses an app vetting process to help make sure that technology is being used purposefully, which we are modeling after Washington County Public Schools.  Our data showed that teachers were only using a limited number of apps we originally had on the iPads. We decided to begin focusing on quality not quantity as we reduce the number of available apps.  The same apps will be available on all iPads across all grade levels for continuity.  Requested apps will be vetted to make sure they are building skills and capacity for students and fall under one of the following 9 criteria…

  • Support Self-Evaluation and Reflection

  • Support Photo and/or Video Annotation

  • Support Compare and Contrast

  • Support Word Processing with Multi-Media

  • Support Real-Time Collaboration

  • Support Mass Communication and Feedback

  • Support Personalized Learning

  • Support Project-Based Learning

  • Support Formative and Summative Assessments

Once it was determined the selection of apps fell into at least 2 of the categories above to build student capacity we then vetted the apps using the following 6 measures to ensure sustainability

1) Alignment to the Curriculum: the ability to integrate into the WCPS Curriculum

2) Vetting: the process used to select software

3) Population Alignment: the ability to support the identified population

4) Compatibility: the ability to run on multiple platforms

5) Validity: mandated or supported by other external agencies

6) Sustainability: criteria to support current and new resources

Our Device app selection document is attached, and these apps have been rolled out among all iPads. We tried to limit the selection to no more than 60 apps and an image size of 10gbs, to allow students to have access to at least 6gb of storage space to create and save projects. (Some of our iPad models are a max of 16gb.
